If you haven’t been able to tell from reading this blog, or if you’re new to this blog and haven’t yet realized, I love playing new courses. The main reasons I started the blog were to network, have a better understanding of the courses my clients play, and of course, to play more golf!

Gentle Creek was a great treat because it was off my radar and turned out to be a really great course that I look forward to playing again. To provide context, I was invited to play Gentle Creek by a friend who has lived on the course for over 7 years now and whose familiar has been members since they moved in. Being new to the area, and with DFW having so many courses around, there are many I still haven’t heard of or played. Gentle Creek was one of those courses.

Nestled in the North West Corner of the Dallas Metroplex is Gentle Creek, situated in a Suburbia of beautiful homes. And while I’m normally not a fan of homes on golf courses, these homes didn’t seem to impede on the playability of the course. There was still ample room. Unlike some community courses where the layout seems to be an afterthought, squeezing in between the community, Gentle Creek definitely put the course first.

COURSE CONDITIONS RATINGS

TEES: 4

FAIRWAYS: 4

GREENS: 4.25

BUNKERS: 4

SCENERY: 3.25

LAYOUT: 4

OVERALL: 3.92

The conditions of the course, particularly the greens, surprised me because aesthetically they didn’t look the best but I’ll be damned if they didn’t play properly and roll true. It makes sense because here in the DFW area, we’ve had nearly two months straight of temperatures over 100* Fahrenheit and little to no rain. Despite those challenges, however, Gentle Creek played great.

The fairways are generous and the homes on the course don’t impede unless you hit your ball significantly offline. There are plenty of ponds and water features to make things interesting, and the use of elevation rolls gently throughout the property, creating some cool features and green complexes.

ACCESSIBILITY

COURSE DIFFICULTY: 3

WALKABILITY: 2.75

There are plenty of tee box options and combination tees to enhance the playability and enjoyment of the course. The course ranges from 5,003 yards to 7,317 yards making it playable for all abilities.

The nice thing about the course is the variety of holes. There are holes that favor fades, others that favor draws, some that require driver, and others that require you to think again. Regardless of the tees you choose, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to hit different shots and use every club in the bag.

The course is definitely walkable though I didn’t walk during my round due to the heat of Texas Summer. Although if it were winter or a shoulder season I bet taking a push cart would be quite enjoyable.

AMENITIES

GOLF SHOP: -

PRACTICE FACILITIES: 4

COMFORT STATIONS: 4.5

FOOD & BEV: 4.5

The clubhouse is under construction so it’s tough to say what amenities they have but based on the outside and the little I understand about the club from talking to the member I played with, it’s a great facility that has a little bit of everything for everyone.

We got some breakfast tacos at the turn and they were really great. I would definitely order them again and explore more of the menu next time. The tacos had a great flavor and were reasonably priced.

One of the nicest features on the property was the comfort stations. They had coolers of water, restrooms, and my favorite, coolers full of iced towels. The iced towel was the perfect way to instantly cool down and regulate the heat. It’s the small details like the iced towel that catch my attention as something unique that added to the overall experience.

SUMMARY

Gentle Creek is exactly what the name implies. It’s a gentle course that can allow you to post a great score while still offering plenty of challenges to make you work for it. It’s a course that will reward you for hitting good shots and penalize you for getting out of position. It’s not overly difficult but isn’t easy either. With a great practice area and plenty of tee boxes to choose from, Gentle Creek is definitely a great spot I could see myself hanging out, practicing, and playing. I’m definitely looking forward to the next time I get to tee it up at Gentle Creek Country Club.
