The sky was blue, the sun was shining, a gentle breeze kept things interesting, and one of Maryland’s most historic 18 holes were ready to be played. Opened for play June 22, 1924, and completed in 1925, The Country Club of Maryland, formerly known as Rogers Forge Club, was opened in a golden age of golf in the Baltimore area. At the time, there were only a handful of facilities in the area. Neighboring clubs would have included Elkridge (1878), Green Spring Valley Hunt Club (1892), Baltimore Country Club (1898), The Suburban Club (1900), Rolling Road (1919), and Hillendale (1923). THE FREDERICK FIVE The 5 Best Public Golf Courses in Maryland (Greater Frederick Area, Maryland) INTRODUCTION I often get asked what my favorite courses in Maryland are. The truth is, Maryland has a lot of great golf courses. Maryland has everything from high-end, old, established private country clubs, to executive courses and par 3 tracks, municipal courses operated by the city or county, and everything in between. There is a little bit of everything for everyone but to me, Frederick, Maryland is home to five of the best courses that anyone can play. I call them, the Frederick Five. THE COURSES The Frederick Five are 5 daily fee, public golf courses all within a few minutes of Frederick, Maryland, which is located in Central Maryland, within an hour from Washington DC, Baltimore, and Annapolis. The courses are PB Dye, Worthington Manor, Whiskey Creek, Maryland National, and Musket Ridge. Each of these courses embodies the best Maryland has to offer. Built on some of the most amazing

RATTLEWOOD GOLF COURSE Mount Airy, Maryland March 4, 2023 OVERVIEW FACILITY TYPE: Public Municipal ( MCG ) YEAR OPENED: 1995 ARCHITECT: Brian Ault, Tom Clark, James Cervone PAR: 72 LENGTH: 5,093 - 6,501 USGA RATING: 64.7 - 71.4 USGA SLOPE: 109 - 131 TEE OPTIONS: 4 WEBSITE: https://www.mcggolf.com/courses/rattlewood PHONE: (301) 607-9000   Rattlewood is exactly what I think about when I think of local suburban golf with consistently good conditions, and a great layout, at a fair price. It’s located in the heart of central Maryland, and it’s always fun to play.  Rattlewood is one of nine courses in Montgomery County as part of the MCG Association. Locals can get an MCG membership to get preferred rates and tee times at any of the courses. Rattlewood is one of my favorites to play because of its gently rolling hills, water features, and risk-reward opportunities with plenty of space off the tee. Every hole is unique, and it always offers opportunities to post a good score. COU

The course is set along classic rolling Maryling hills, rock outcroppings, and woodlands. There’s an old stone building in the middle of the 18th fairway that can be seen from around the course that sets the tone for the round. Whiskey Creek is a higher-end daily fee course available to the public that offers one of the best layouts in Maryland. Part of The Frederick Five, Whiskey Creek offers dramatic views, challenging yet fair holes, and with 18 unique holes, it offers many opportunities to hit really fun shots.
