Whiskey Creek is no doubt one of the best courses available to the public in Maryland. The course is set along classic rolling Maryling hills, rock outcroppings, and woodlands. There’s an old stone building in the middle of the 18th fairway that can be seen from around the course that sets the tone for the round.

Whiskey Creek is a higher-end daily fee course available to the public that offers one of the best layouts in Maryland. Part of The Frederick Five, Whiskey Creek offers dramatic views, challenging yet fair holes, and with 18 unique holes, it offers many opportunities to hit really fun shots.

COURSE CONDITIONS RATINGS

TEES: 2

FAIRWAYS: 3

GREENS: 3

BUNKERS:

SCENERY: 4

LAYOUT: 4

OVERALL: 3.33

Whiskey Creek is typically really well maintained. During this most recent round, they still had several tees covered with winter tarps and temporary tees set when necessary. This was the first time I’ve seen the tee boxes covered like this and while it did hinder play for anyone playing from the Blue or White tees, the dramatic views and unique holes made up for this inconvenience.

The greens, while on the slower side, were still receptive and the ball rolled true enough to make some important putts necessary to put together a solid score. While I did find myself in a handful of greenside bunkers, the sand was in great shape, and was able to get up and down the majority of the time.

ACCESSIBILITY

COURSE DIFFICULTY: 3

WALKABILITY: 2.5

While the course stretches 7,000 yards from the back tees, it's one of the easier courses in the Frederick Five. The fairways are wide, the greens receptive, and there are bailout areas so you’re not penalized for hitting a poor shot.

There is only 1 blind tee shot on the course and it comes on hole #5 which is one of the signature holes on the course with the tee box elevated over a hundred feet above the fairway, offering one of the most dramatic views on the property and one of the most exciting tee shots you can hit in the whole state.

While I have walked the course before, riding does make it a little easier to navigate the hills. The distance between holes isn’t great, making it easy to go from one hole to the next, however, being built on the sides of rolling hills could challenge a walker who isn’t the straightest off the tee.

AMENITIES

GOLF SHOP: 3.5

PRACTICE FACILITIES: 3.5

COMFORT STATIONS: 2

FOOD & BEV: 3.5

The golf shop at Whiskey Creek has everything you’d expect from a higher-end daily fee course. They have a large practice green near the first tee and a driving range near the 10th tee. Whiskey Creek also offers great instructional programs including private coaching and group clinics.

The food at Whiskey Creek is better than most, and reasonably priced, but should be ordered ahead of time to make sure it’s ready and you don’t hold up the pace of play unless, of course, you’re sitting down to eat before or after your round.

Be sure to use the restroom before you head out because there aren’t any comfort stations once on the course.

During this most recent round, they did have a snack car driving around which made it convenient to load up on snacks and drinks during the round.

SUMMARY

If you’ve never played Whiskey Creek, put it on your list and go play! If you haven’t played in a while, it’s worth going back to. Whiskey Creek always offers a great playing experience, an opportunity to put up a good score, and some of the best views in the state.

Centrally located, Whiskey Creek is minutes away from Frederick Maryland, and within an hour of Baltimore, Washington DC, and Annapolis. Come early and stay late. Make the most of your time on the property, warm up, get dialed in, enjoy some great food, and play a course you’ll remember and want to keep coming back to.
