Nelson played professionally from 1935 - 1946 where he won 5 majors and 54 tour events including a record 11 in a row on his way to winning 18 events in the 1945 season alone. Regarded as one of the greatest golfers the game has seen, Nelson saw golf as a means to an end. He really wanted to be a rancher in his home state of Texas and saw golf as a way to make enough money to do so. He retired at the age of 34 and over the years designed a small handful of golf courses, including Timarron Country Club in Southlake, Texas.
