Byron Nelson, also known as Lord Byron, is one of the great figures in the history of golf. Nelson played professionally from 1935 - 1946 where he won 5 majors and 54 tour events including a record 11 in a row on his way to winning 18 events in the 1945 season alone. Regarded as one of the greatest golfers the game has seen, Nelson saw golf as a means to an end. He really wanted to be a rancher in his home state of Texas and saw golf as a way to make enough money to do so. He retired at the age of 34 and over the years designed a small handful of golf courses, including Timarron Country Club in Southlake, Texas.

OVERALL: 4.04

Timarron is an exclusive private country club located in one of the more affluent areas of the DFW metro area. Established just 30 years ago, Timarron Country Club has found its way into the heart of Texas golf culture. It helps when your architect is one of the greatest the game has seen.

The course was in outstanding condition given the fact that Dallas has had over 2 months without rain and 6 weeks straight of temperature highs reaching over 100 degrees. The greens were firm but receptive and allowed you to hit an array of shots. They didn’t seem to break as much as they looked which allowed you to play less break and be a little more aggressive.

If you missed the greens you’re in luck. The areas surrounding the greens, including the bunkers were well manicured. This is an area that often gets neglected or overused at many facilities but Timarron is able to keep these areas well maintained, giving you an opportunity to save par. Without these areas being well kept, it may be difficult to hit the shots required to get the ball close.

One of the nice things about 100 degree heat and no rain is the firm ground upon which the ball can roll. This makes things interesting as you must be very careful about what club you use off the tee as it may release more than expected. Play your lines carefully, and set yourself up for the next shot.

ACCESSIBILITY

COURSE DIFFICULTY: 3.75

WALKABILITY: 4

One of the nice things about Timarron is the accessibility around the course. With 4 tees and 3 combo tee options, the course is very playable. Unlike other courses, Timarron doesn’t have massive forced carries or super tight penalizing holes. There’s a tee box option for everyone and the course is designed in such a way that any ability can play it.

I might as well have walked the course because it was cart path only. Overall the course is not overly long or hilly, making it a walkable course. Like most Texas courses, obviously season, sun, and weather are big factors but with coolers of water and ice towels throughout the course, walking quickly becomes a little easier.

AMENITIES

GOLF SHOP: 4.5

PRACTICE FACILITIES: 4.5

COMFORT STATIONS: 3.5

As soon as you park your car you can see the large practice putting green and just off in the distance is the driving range. The putting green is large and has a great balance between sloped and flat areas, perfect for dialing in the flat stick. And the driving range is grass with a nearby shortgame section. Whether it’s a quick warm up or a deep practice session, they have you covered.

If you’re looking for high quality merchandise, Timarron has you covered. Their collection of apparel and soft goods included high end premium selections you don’t typically find outside of private facilities. From a new golf outfit to headcovers, hats and belts to bags and shoes, the shop has a great selection to choose from.

SUMMARY

My favorite part about Timarron was thinking about Byron Nelson and the input he had into the design of the course. Opened just a decade before his death, Timarron feels as though there’s a wisdom to its design. It’s subtle. It’s not overly difficult but it will beat you up if you’re not careful. Yet at the same time, wise play will allow you effortless opportunities to go low. I look forward to my next Byron Nelson course and will of course keep you posted with a review and hope you too get out and play somewhere new.
