Golf Course Review Compass Pointe, Pasadena, Maryland

 COMPASS POINTE SOUTH/WEST COURSES

PASADENA, MARYLAND

NOVEMBER 8, 2022

OVERVIEW

YEAR OPENED: 2003

ARCHITECT: Lindsay Ervin

# OF HOLES: 36

TYPE OF GRASS: Latitude Bermuda

LOCATION: Pasadena, Maryland

FACILITY TYPE: Public

Designed by golf course architect Lindsay Ervin and opened in 2003, Compass Pointe is a 36-hole facility located in the heart of Maryland. It is easily accessible from Baltimore, Annapolis,  Washington DC, and Frederick.

Compass Pointe is a factory, by which I mean it’s active and constantly hosting tournaments, league events, and daily play. Even though they are busy, you can usually find a tee time, and prices are reasonable.

Before your round, you’ll have ample opportunity to get warmed up. Compass Pointe has an extensive driving range, typically on mats, and two practice greens to prep your short game and putting. Range balls are not included with your round but can be purchased via a ball dispenser on the range. The practice greens get a little congested, so be careful with your wedges, but the range usually has plenty of spots open. Just note that because of how much play the course gets, they may try to send you out early, so plan accordingly and ensure you get ample time to warm up and stretch out.

Despite hosting much play, the course was in excellent condition, especially given the time of year. Fall Golf in Maryland can be hit or miss depending on the weather and the number of rounds on any given year. I was pleasantly surprised with the condition of the bunkers and greens, which is always a nice treat. The greens were firm yet receptive and rolled reasonably well, given the amount of play the course hosts.

The fairways were comparable to most Maryland courses this time of year. You'll likely have a good lie if you find the fairway with your drive. If you miss the fairway or green, however, you’ll probably find yourself in a difficult spot. The grass surrounding the greens, in particular, was a bit patchy. If you’re playing in a league or event, you may find getting up and down around the greens challenging. If you’re playing casually, however, I suggest lifting, cleaning, and placing to keep the pace of play up while keeping your scores down.

ACCESSIBILITY

COURSE DIFFICULTY: 4

WALKABILITY: 4

PACE OF PLAY: 4.5 hours

I found the South Course at Compass Pointe more difficult than the North Course. The South Course had more forced carry off the tee and into the green. The South Course is also tighter off the tee and doesn’t have as much room around the greens to bail out. Part of the difficulty came from the time of year. Fall Golf in Maryland typically results in dormant grasses, which repel balls more than lush sticky summer grass.

While the course could be walked, there are a few holes with some distance between them, so it’s best to play with someone driving a golf car that can shuttle you between a couple of holes as needed. For example, driving from 9 green to 10 tee takes about 3 minutes. On foot, you’re looking at more like 10-15 minutes, especially if you stop at the turn.

The pace of play was on the slower side, but I believe that was only because I played in a twosome behind a fivesome. Once we made the turn onto the back nine, the fivesome let us play through. It took us about 3 hours to play the front and about 1.5 hours to play the back.

SUMMARY

OVERALL RATING: 3.50

Overall I recommend checking out Compass Pointe. Many locals are involved in their league play which is a great way to get out every week, meet new players, and because they have 36 holes, you’re not playing the same course every week.

With six different tees to choose from, you can pick the tees that best suit your game. Because of the forced carries on the course, I recommend playing a tee box or two closer than you usually play, at least your first time or two around, so you can adjust to the layout and gain a better understanding of where you can and cannot miss around the greens.
