28 miles northwest of downtown Dallas, Texas you’ll find 27 holes of pure fun with a price that’s hard to beat. Lake Park has two golf courses, an 18-hole championship course that stretches to 6,135 yards and plays to a par of 70, and a 9-hole executive course with lights so you can play after the sun goes down that plays to a par 28.

For $25 to walk the championship course and $18 to walk the executive course, it’s tough to beat. The course has views of Lake Lewisville and is as wide open as a course gets. The atmosphere is laid back and has the feel of a local's hangout. The course allows better players to post low scores with plenty of opportunities for birdies while still being the perfect place to learn the game or play golf for the first time.

The first round I played was on the championship course. We ended up getting paired with one of the guys who works at the course and he suggested we check out the executive course and play night golf. During the first round at the executive course, we saw a lady with her dog so we asked the golf shop if dogs were allowed on the course to which they said, as long as you walk the course, the dog is well-behaved, you pick up after them, and you keep them off the greens, they’re allowed to accompany you. Because of this, I’ve gone every day this week. It’s fun to play golf under the lights and the dogs love being out there getting to play with their Dad.

The courses are wide open with few bunkers. The championship course has only 6 bunkers which are 6 more bunkers than the executive course. Because of its wide-open layout and ability to play the ball on the ground with open and exposed greens, it’s the perfect place for me to play with my vintage club collection.

The first round out was with hickories, the second round was with MacGreggor Nicklaus Muirfield 20th Anniversary Irons 1-SW, the third round was a set of 1981 Titleist Tour Model Blades 1-PW, the fourth round was the first round with a new set of Cobra Forged Tour irons 3-GW, and the fifth round was with Miura Retro Tournament Blades 3-PW.

COURSE CONDITIONS RATINGS

TEES: 2.5

FAIRWAYS: 3

GREENS: 3.75

BUNKERS: 2

SCENERY: 3.5

LAYOUT: 3.5

OVERALL: 3.04

While not a true links course, the ground is firm and fast, there are very few trees on the course, there is plenty of wind, and it’s near water, which is about as close as a course can get to feeling like you’re overseas.

Despite having a lot of play, the course has been in fair condition. You draw fair lies in the fairways, the greens roll well, and the practice areas were well kept. Texas is known for firm ground and wind and Lake Park did not disappoint. It was really fun to play the ball on the ground. Having lived in Maryland for the last few years where it's always wet and the grass is a little sticky, it's difficult to play the ball down but at Lake Park, playing the ball on the ground is exactly how to tackle the course, especially around the greens.

Some of the best shots all week have been played on the ground. Chipping with a 6 iron, bunt chipping a driver, putter from 30 yards away, and pitching into hills to kill the speed and letting it release are all great options at Lake Park. If you’re usually a player who likes to throw the ball in the air with a lofted wedge, Lake Park is the perfect course to learn how to play the ball on the ground.

ACCESSIBILITY

COURSE DIFFICULTY: 2

WALKABILITY: 5

The course, in my opinion, is meant to be walked. It’s the perfect course to walk because it’s relatively flat, the holes are near each other, and it’s not overly long. If you don’t prefer carrying your bag, try a pushcart. I believe walking a course when you’re able to can help you play better and Lake Park is the perfect place to try if you haven’t before.

Lake Park offers great opportunities for golfers to develop their game. If you’re brand new, go to the putting green, learn to chip, hit balls on the range. When you’re ready, go play 9 holes on the executive course. After you’re comfortable, try 18 on the championship course. And if you’re game allows for it, see how many birdies you can card. The course suits everyone. That said, because of the popularity of the course, you can likely expect a slower pace of play so taking a golf car for $7 may be well worth it so you have a place to sit.

AMENITIES

GOLF SHOP: 3.5

PRACTICE FACILITIES: 4

COMFORT STATIONS: 1.5

The championship course and executive courses have different clubhouses so be sure to put the correct location into your GPS before heading out. If you go to the wrong place, they’re only a half mile apart. Inside both clubhouses, they did a great job using the space and making it feel like a place you’d want to hang out.

Coming from Maryland, it’s difficult to find a grass driving range at a public facility. There certainly are a few but they’re not as common as they seem to be here in Texas. Lake Park has a grass range that sees a lot of use but they seem to maintain it well enough that you can get in solid practice sessions.

Keep in mind before heading out that the only restrooms are in the clubhouses. There are a couple of outhouses on the championship course and none on the executive course so be sure to use the ones in the clubhouse before teeing off.

SUMMARY

Lake Park is definitely a course I will visit again. I love the idea of being able to go to the course early, warm up on a grass range and well-manicured putting green, play 18 on the championship course, grab a bite to eat, then play under the lights on the 9-hole executive course with the dogs. It’s a great course for any ability and the price keeps it accessible to everyone. If you’re in the DFW metro area, swing by Lake Park and have yourself a great time.
