When I first played Little Bennett nearly a decade ago I swore I would never go back. Years went by, I moved around the country and eventually found myself back in Maryland. Since then, Little Bennett has grown on me and become one of my favorite courses to play. It’s a course you must play a few times to understand or at least play with someone who can help you get around.

Little Bennett is one of nine courses in the Montgomery County Golf Association. The courses are all open to the public and locals can buy an annual membership into the association to get discounted rates throughout the year.

COURSE CONDITIONS RATINGS

TEES: 3.5

FAIRWAYS: 3.5

GREENS: 4.5

BUNKERS: 4

SCENERY: 3.75

LAYOUT: 3.75

OVERALL: 3.83

Little Bennett is situated in the heart of central Maryland adjacent to Little Bennett Recreation Park and Sugarloaf Mountain. The course features tight knobby rolling hills, crags, gaps, and elevation changes. It’s a course that takes a few rounds to understand, but once you do, it’s fun to play, and the greens are always in great condition.

The greens during this round were like glass. They were firm, they were fast, and they were pure. It placed a premium on clean ball striking and touch with the flat stick.

ACCESSIBILITY

COURSE DIFFICULTY: 4

WALKABILITY: 2

If you’re crooked off the tee, you may struggle at Little Bennett as there are a lot of sloping fairways that accentuate a miss and cause balls to bounce into the woods. But if you can play smart and position yourself around the course, many opportunities are waiting.

If you like to walk, Little Bennett may not be for you. There’s a lot of hilly terrain and while it may not be impossible to do, it would likely hurt pace of play in several places. Instead, opt to take a golf car. If it’s cart path only you’ll be doing plenty of walking anyway.

AMENITIES

GOLF SHOP: 3

PRACTICE FACILITIES: 4

Little Bennett is a classic public golf course with a little bit of everything you need. From clothes, balls, and tees in the golf shop, to a driving range, short game area, and putting green, you have every resource to grow your game.

SUMMARY

Not far down the road from the Frederick Five, Little Bennett shares much of the same topography. With views of Sugarloaf Mountain, Cherry Blossoms in the springtime, deer, fox, and birds, Little Bennett always offers a memorial round of golf. Most players won’t finish the round with the ball they started with, but it’ll be fun nonetheless.
