It’s not often I get to play a course that bends the rules and creates an experience unique to anything else I’ve ever played. Everything about Stewart Peninsula is unique and creates an experience you won’t soon forget. This hidden gem in North Texas has views of Lake Lewisville on every hole and has a clever routing reminiscent of St. Andrews and other old links courses with its shared greens.

Stewart Peninsula is a 9/18 hole golf course. What makes it so unique is its 10 greens… Each hole at Stewart Peninsula, except hole 18 which has two separate greens, has a shared green with two holes; one for the red flag and one for the yellow flag. Each hole has two sets of tees, red tees, and yellow tees. For the first nine holes, you play from the red tees to the red flag. Then after you make the turn, you play from the yellow tees to the yellow flag. Each set of tees has a forward, middle, and back so you can choose the length best suited to your game.

COURSE CONDITIONS RATINGS

GREENS: 2.50

BUNKERS: 2.00

SCENERY: 4.00

LAYOUT: 3.50

OVERALL: 2.88

The best part of Stewart Peninsula is the views. Situated on a peninsula in Lake Lewisville, each hole has a view of the water. The layout uses the land very well although I will warn you, you may have to play the course a few times to get comfortable with the layout as balls tend to bounce along the firm Texas ground. I suggest picking up a yardage book in the golf shop before teeing off so you get an idea of the layout, especially as hole #1 provides a semi-blind tee shot right out of the gate.

ACCESSIBILITY

COURSE DIFFICULTY: 3

WALKABILITY: 4

The course plays to a par of 66 with each nine consisting of four par 3’s, four par 4’s, and a single par 5. It is easily walkable at only 5,325 yards from the back tees. While there are some hills on the course, how much you have to walk up and down them depends on the accuracy of your tee shots. Each hole is near the next and there’s enough variety between the red holes and yellow holes to provide a different experience on each nine.

AMENITIES

Stewart Peninsula has one of the most unique clubhouses I’ve seen. It looks like a lighthouse and is fitting for its location on the lake which is popular with boaters. Inside the clubhouse there isn’t a lot of merchandise for sale however there are plenty of common items in case you forgot something, a good variety of snacks and drinks, and of course friendly staff to help you with any questions.

If you get there early, Stewart Peninsula has a practice green centrally located near the clubhouse and first/tenth tees, and a driving range on the other side of the property a short drive away by golf car.

SUMMARY

Stewart Peninsula is a hidden gem that I hope more people discover and get to experience. With the rate golf is booming in Texas, and with the PGA of America moving its headquarters just down the road in Frisco, and with the LPGA playing over at Old American Golf Club which can be seen from Stuart Peninsula, it’s only a matter of time before this locals secret gets out.
