There are few holidays I enjoy more than Thanksgiving. Unlike other holidays that lean towards gifts and material goods, Thanksgiving is about expressing gratitude for the ones you love. And we share that love by making great food, bonding over a few beverages, or in my case this year, getting to play golf with some of my best mates.

Westridge in McKinney, Texas is an 18 hole public facility focused on making the game fun and accessible. For Thanksgiving this year, they had an 8:30 shotgun that was able to accommodate a full course but ensure everyone was done by 1:30 to get home and spend time with their families. It was the perfect place to spend the morning playing golf and making memories.

COURSE CONDITIONS RATINGS

TEES: 3.50

FAIRWAYS: 3.50

GREENS: 3.75

BUNKERS: 3.50

SCENERY: 3.00

LAYOUT: 3.75

OVERALL: 3.50

The course was in great condition and provided a fun experience that would reward good shots without being overly penal if you miss. While the course winds through a lot of houses, they are typically far enough out of the way that an errant ball has a chance of staying in play. If you tend to be really crooked off the tee, I might suggest taking less than driver off the tee to be safe.

I enjoyed the layout as it provided a variety of holes. With six par 3’s, six par 4’s, and six par 5’s, Westridge’s unique design provide plenty of scoring opportunities. Whether you’re a newer golfer or shorter hitter who can take advantage of the par 3’s, or a more developed golfer with faster speed who can take advantage of the par 5’s, Westridge is sure to have plenty that fits your eye and suits your style of play.

ACCESSIBILITY

COURSE DIFFICULTY: 3.00

WALKABILITY: 3.75

Westridge follows a very traditional double-loop layout with the front 9 playing on the west and north sides of the property and the back 9 playing on the east and south sides of the property. Each loop offers three par 3’s, par 4’s, and par 5’s and is the only course in Texas with six par 5’s. The course can definitely be walked as there isn’t much elevation change, and holes are fairly close together with a few exceptions which are manageable on foot, especially for a seasoned walker.

One of the nice things about Westridge is that you’re not overly penalized for hitting bad shots. It’s a great place to work on your game, progress your game, and perfect your game. You could learn to play golf at Westridge, play the forward tees, and get comfortable being on the course and putting together a score. You could also start moving back tees since there aren’t many forced carries. And once you’ve dialed your game in, the course will reward good shots and allow you to go deep.

AMENITIES

GOLF SHOP: 3.50

PRACTICE FACILITIES: 3.50

COMFORT STATIONS: 3.00

The golf shop, while not overly large, had some great merchandise and all the basic equipment you would need. If you never played before, you could walk in, get a set of clubs, an outfit, balls, and tees, take a lesson, and go play, all in a day!

The range is centrally located and has some fun targets to hit to. The practice green, also centrally located, is large and sloping enough to get a variety of breaks and feels, and rolls pretty true to how the course plays.

Men who normally urinate in the woods; beware. While there are a few comfort stations, there are very few trees and wooded areas and the wooded areas there are contain signs telling you not to pee in them. I say this to give you a heads up as I know how important that can be to some people so don’t say I didn’t warn you.

SUMMARY

In a nutshell, Westridge is a fantastic public golf facility in North West Dallas that, with the expansion of the metroplex, is going to boom as the community continues to grow and what’s already a local’s favorite is going to become a staple for the community. Westridge is easy to get to, affordable, well conditioned, and has what you need to practice and improve your game. Swing by and check it out for yourself.
